Be a Pirate! Steam Deck Compatibility: What to Know

Can You Play Be a Pirate! on Steam Deck?

Be a Pirate! Steam Deck compatibility carries Valve’s Unknown rating, so check its current compatibility badge before buying specifically for handheld play. Its SteamOS/Linux rating is also Unknown. The game launched on November 3, 2026, with Windows support.

Those are separate pieces of the purchase decision: Windows support identifies the game’s native PC platform, while the Deck rating addresses Valve’s handheld compatibility assessment. Unknown is a separate status from Verified, Playable, or Unsupported.

Both requirement tiers call for 3 GB of available storage. Here, the action includes simultaneous land and river attacks, changing enemy routes, and towers that develop during combat.

Features That Matter for Handheld Play

Steam Cloud, adjustable difficulty, and the ability to play without timed input are supported features. For players moving between a desktop and a handheld, Steam Cloud is especially relevant; difficulty options also give you room to adjust the challenge.

The tactical demands deserve attention, too. Tower placement changes land routes, elevation affects placement results, and each tower has four upgrade tracks: Offense, Range, Specialty, and Signature.

When evaluating the game on a handheld, focus on these specific interactions:

  • Tower placement: Check whether you can comfortably select positions and judge elevation while monitoring both attack routes.
  • Upgrade menus: Check the readability of upgrade choices before spending Doubloons during a battle.
  • Bridges: Keep the river in view when planning a crossing. Bridges create another land route, while Crown Sloops continue underneath.
  • Damage types: Read enemy resistances before committing upgrades to Physical, Fire, Ice, Electric, or Poison damage.

The tower roster gives those placement decisions specific consequences. The Cannon provides straightforward firepower, the Voodoo Cauldron deals poison damage, and the Heliograph Battery uses a focused beam. The Commodore's Flag strengthens nearby towers. Position the flag around towers you want to support, and match elemental attacks to enemy weaknesses. Towers change visibly and functionally as you upgrade them during combat, so pay attention to both their battlefield positions and their upgrade choices.

Crew management adds another set of decisions between the land and sea defenses. You can recruit and equip 15 unique Pirate Captains, each with permanent bonuses and personal ties to the story. Your active captain accompanies your ship into battle. The Captain's Compass includes 266 nodes, with achievements for unlocking your first node, reaching 50 nodes, unlocking a Keystone, and unlocking the Helm at its center. Inspect those choices alongside tower upgrades when judging how comfortably you can navigate the game's menus.

There are also specific tactical challenges beyond simply winning a map. The Long Way Round asks you to extend the enemies' march to three times its original length. Every Gun Aboard requires eight different kinds of tower in a winning battle, while Fully Rigged requires purchasing all 20 battle upgrades for one tower. Use these objectives to explore route construction, tower selection, and upgrade management.

Endless mode continues the defense after the campaign's maps. Its achievement milestones include Beyond the Horizon at 20 waves, Charts Fade at 30, Compasses Falter at 40, and Stars Forget at 55. Evaluate handheld comfort during these extended defenses, when you are managing tower upgrades while covering both approaches to your ship.
